“I didn’t know food could be so fun”. . .

The other day, we had Gourmet Burger night at the Schie house. Now, I don’t mean that we simply grilled burgers and loaded them with ketchup, mustard, pickle, tomato, and some cheese. No, I mean we had “gourmet burgers”.

Our gourmet burgers are topped with things like, homemade guacamole, caramelized onions, Chicago-style neon relish, buffalo pepper and Maytag blue cheese, thick-cut peppered bacon, grilled salami and honey baked ham, homemade barbecue and sweet Thai sauce… and the crème de la crème… the fried egg (in bacon grease, or course!). Now that’s what the Schie’s call a gourmet burger!



Anyway, we invited some old friends over to enjoy this gourmet burger night, and some new friends! Floyd, who is a sales representative for a company we deal with and his wife Brenda, joined us for the night. It was the first time that we have had them over to our house for dinner. Now, I know what you’re probably thinking, “Really, you invite your new friends over for dinner, and you serve them burgers? Really!?” Let me just say that they had a great time! They enjoyed seeing how we prepared these gourmet burgers, how we mounded on the toppings, how everyone was laughing as we steadied the fried egg - just so - on top of the finished burger creation… then, how we all sat down around the dining room table and dug in!



As we sat and talked, and laughed; in fact, there’s was more laughing than talking, Floyd said it! He sat back, and looked around the table and said, “I didn’t know food could be so fun! I mean, I thought we were coming over for just burgers. I will never be able to look at a burger the same way!”

That statement brought me back to a cooking class I did in Wooster a while back, and I called it “Fun with Food”. It was all about food that we could have fun with, or play with, or at least eat with our fingers. And at this class, people said the same thing that Floyd said.



Most people have lost the “fun” in food, but don’t you think it’s time to have fun with food again? Food doesn’t have to be pretentious. It can be simple food, but the key to the fun is the people you share it with. The relationships that are being built while enjoying the food.

Food can be fun! So, light up the grill, get some burgers out, and call some old friends… and maybe even some new friends over…

(Hey folks, here’s a recipe from my neighbor, Matt. He loves a great burger! Enjoy!)



Matt’s Burgers

1 pound hamburger (use 80/20 burger)
2 tablespoons dried basil
2 tablespoons dried oregano 
1 tablespoon garlic powder
1 tablespoon onion powder
3 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce 
Salt and pepper, to taste
2 teaspoons bacon grease (this is something that I added to the recipe!)

Mix everything together until blended. Form into patties and grill to desired doneness. Serve with gourmet toppings (grilled salami and honey baked ham are a MUST!) and a toasted bun.
